동격어의 또 다른 사용법을 위 문단의 마지막 문장에서 볼 수 있다. Genetic code of life를 표현하는 4 symbolic letters의 세부사항을 나열하여 보여주는 elaborating appositive이다.
And the prescription is written in a language that has four letters : A for Adenine, T for Thymine, G for Guanine, and C for Cytosine.
위와 같이 세부사항을 설명하는 동격어 용례는 scientific discourse에서 자주 만난다.
In the 1830s, the brilliant English mathematician, Charles Babbage (동격어), built a model for a machine that could compute numerical tables. But he died without his boldest design realized - a machine with two key concepts of modern computers : the ability to store information and follow programs(동격어).
탁월한 영국의 수학자의 동격어로 Charles Babbage를 사용했고, 둘째 문장에서는 그의 생존시에 실현은 안됐으나 19세기 초에 이미 Babbage가 고안해 낸 현대 컴퓨터의 기본 개념 두 가지 즉 the ability to store information and follow programs를 알려준다.
동양의 침술을 회의적으로만 보아오던 서양과학이 endorphins and enkephalins과 침술을 연계하기 시작했다. 신경계통이 필요에 따라 자생적으로 생성하여 진통제로 사용하고 있다는 사실을 뒤늦게 최근에 발견한것이다. Morphine-like pain killers의 동격어인 endorphins and enkephalins를 수식하는 수식어들이 명사의 뒤에 위치하고 있다.

Elaborating Appositive는 목적이나 문제를 설명할 때에도 많이 사용하는 문형이다.
At Carnegie Mellon University, Mark Raebert has studied locomotion for 8 years. The work in his laboratory has a dualgoal : to understand how living creatures move with grace and dexterity without losing balance, and to lay the foundations for building robots with similar agility and speed.
이중적인 연구목적을 동격어로 두 개의 infinitive phrases로 풀어서 설명한다. 처음 infinitive phrase는 13개 단어 그 다음 infinitive phrase는 12개 단어로 꽤 길지만 구조가 간결하고 비슷한 수의 단어들이 균형을 이루어 읽기도 쉽다.
동격어를 썼다고 문장이 곡 길어지만 할 필요도 없다. 해결하려는 문제의 이중성을 아래와 같이 동격어로 마치 등식을 연상시키는 잛은 설명을 할 수도 있다.

Generalizing Appositives
Elaborating Appositive와는 반대로 숲을 보여주는 역할을 하는 것이 Generalizing Appositive이다.
다음 문장은 강변의 비옥한 계곡에 피어난 문명의 발상지들을 동격어로 나열하여 한 문장 안에 큰 그림을 그려준다.

아래 예문은 동격어를 사용하여 쓴 손의 찬미이다. Generalizing appositive의 또 하나의 예이다. 스물다섯 개의 관절이 펴는 58개의 독특한 운동으로 문명과 문화를 창설해 온 주인공이 손이다. 인체공학의 극치를 논하는 과학 이야기의 문장이 우아하지 말란 법이 없음을 보여준다.
The unique engineering design of the human body reaches its apex in the hand. Powerful and precise servant of the mind, creator of civilization and culture, twenty-five joints give it 58 distinctly different motions and make it the most versatile instrument in earth.
요즘 technical wirting에서는 문장의 길이를 20단어 이내로 줄이라고 적극 권장한다. 짧게 쓸 수 있는데 일부러 긴 문장을 쓸 필요는 없다. 그러나 문장구조가 정연하고 어휘선택이 정확하면 한 문장이 20개 단어를 넘으면 안된다는 제한에 꼭 억매일 필요는 없다고 본다.
