전치사구(前置詞句) : Preposotoonal Phrase
전치사를 사용하지 않고 두 문장을 연속하여 쓰기가 어려울 정도로 전치사는 자주 사용된다. 영어의 거의 모든 문장에는 전치사구가 있다고 해도 지나치지 않을 정도로 사용빈도수가 높고 그만큼 그 용법은 중요하다. 태도,이유,유사성,원인,조건, 등의 관계를 나타냄으로써 글을 쓰는 사람이 표현하려는 idea를 부연해주고, 표현하고 싶은 여러 가지 생각이나 개념 사이에 시간적, 공간적, 지리적인 문맥을 마련하여 논지의 방향을 독자에게 제시하여 준다.
흔히 사용하는 전치사
at, against, by, for, from, for, in, into, like, of, on, to, with, after, before, between, despite, during, over, through, under, until, unlike, without, according to, as far back as, because of, countrary to, except for, in addition to, in compliance with, in the absence of, rather than, thanks to,
유사성 : If we examine DNA closely, we find that the two twisted strands are connected chemically. Like rungs in a ladder, four different chemical baseslink the two strands together.
차이점 : Unlike most substances, water is lighter as a solid than it is as a liquid.
조건 : Despite what most people believe, many rivers are naturally murky, not crystal-clear and clean.
접근법 : With the right architects and engineers he gathered around him, Henry Ford produced cars efficiently, quickly, and profitably.
접근법 : With genetic engineering, one can pluck out the genes for disease resistance from this plant and add it specifically to the corn plant. And you can see that genetic engineering is really a fine-tuning of breeding.
이유 : For their work in genetics, two americans and a Frenchman received the Novel Prize in medicine.
원인 : Nonsanitary landfills, such as the Nanjido landfill in South Korea, are common in developing countries because of their relatively low management cost.
절(節, Clause)을 전치사구로 줄이기
주어 동사를 갖고 있는 절 대신에 전치사구를 사용할 수 있다. 원고를 수정할 때 이따금 절이 어느 특정 문장을 길다고 느끼게 하거나, 또는 아이디어와 아이디어 사이의 관계를 정확하게 밝혀주지 못할때 전치사구로 바꾸면 보다 간결하고 명확해 진다.
전치사구 : Although they have a meancing appearance, most reptiles are not really vicious if you leave them alone.
전치사구 : Despite their menacing appearance, most reptiles are not really vicious if you leave them alone.
절(節) : Because gasoline prices have increased and because the public become interested in fitness, bicycles have become a popular means of urban transportation.
전치사구 : Thanks to the increase in gasoline prices and the public's interest in fitness, bicycles have become a popular means of urban transportation.
전치사구(前置詞句)의 과용(過用)은 혼란(混亂)의 근원(根源)
8개의 전치사구를 가진 아래 문장의 뜻을 살펴 보자. 의미를 파악할 때까지 두 세번 읽어보자.

'어렵다'. '무슨 뜻인지 모르겠다'가 당연히 정답이다. 왜? 전치사구를 너무 많이 사용했기 때문이다. 고만고만한 전치사구 8개가 (각각 3~5개 단어로 형성) 대등한 value를 가진 다른 의미를 내걸고 있어서 읽는 사람이 그 뜻을 정리하여 이해하기가 매우 혼란스럽다. 마치 교실에서 선생님 질문에 학생 전원이 각자 다른 답을 동시에 큰 소리로 주창했을 때 아이들이 무슨 말을 했는지 선생님이 알 수 없는 상황과 유사하다. 전치사구 마다 밑줄을 그어 놓으면 난해한 이유가 더 잘 보인다.

치유 방법은? 짧은 두 개의 문장으로 바꿔서 한 문장안에 전치사구를 줄이는 방법이다.
1.The retinoblastome(Rb) tumor suppressor represses E2F transcription activity through its interaction with the transactivation domain of the E2F transcription factor.
2.This is one of the central features of G1/S arrest in the mammalian cell cycle.
8개의 전치사구가 6개로 줄었고 6개가 다시 한 문장에 3개씩으로 줄어서 의미를 파악하기가 쉬워진 것이다.
한 문장 안에 전치사구를 몇 개 이상 사용하면 안된다는 법은 없지만 세 개 이상은 안써야 필요없는 혼란을 피할 수 있다.
또 유의할 것은 주어와 동사 사이에 전치사구가 하나나 둘 이상 끼어들면 주어와 동사의 수의 일치에 오류가 발생할 가능성이 높아진다.
