정관사 the 의 용법

아마도 한국 과학자들이 쓴 논문에서 가장 빈번한 문법상의 오류는 "the"와 관련이 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. "the"가 있어야 하는 곳에 없거나, 없어도 되는 곳에 붙이는 경우가 부지기수다. "the"가 하나도 없는 논문도 있는가 하면 명사만 보면 무조건 "the"를 붙이는 경우도 있다. 우리 말에는 the에 해당하는 단어가 없다. 우선은 문법이 정한 규칙을 지키면서 상황 판단 연습으로 익히는 방법 밖에 없는 것 같다.

다음 여섯 가지 규칙만 준수하면 정관사 사용법에 통달할 수 있으리라 생각된다.

일반적으로 정관사 the는 명사나 명사구가 가리키는 것이 특이하거나 독특하다는 것을 나타낸다. 그러면 어던 상황에서 명사나 명사구가 가리키는 것이 유일무이하다고 할 수 있는가? 다음과 같은 여러 가지 다른 상황이 있을 수 있다.

1. 명사가 특별한 종류의 형용사의 수식을 받고 있을 때, 그 명사가 가리키는 것이 독특하다 또는 유일무이하다 라고 할 수 있으면, 그 때에 명사 앞에 the를 붙인다.

   ● 최상급 형용사 

      the tallest building, the fastest car, the heaviest machine

   ● 序數 형용사

       the first house, the last page, the second player, the fifth '''', the nth''', etc.

   ● 특정 형용사

       the only solution, the sole excuse, the exact position, the current status, and the present research

2. 명사가 어던 독특하고 유별난 시간이나 장소를 가리키는 명사일 경우 그 명사 앞에 the를 붙인다.

    ● 특정한 기간

       the past, the present, the future, the 1940s, the early 1980s

    ● 우리가 사는 세계의 특이한 물리적인 형상 중 독특하여 유일무이 한 것

       the sky, the earth, the sun, the moon, the ground

    ● 하나 밖에 없다고 자타가 인정하는 지리적인 형상

       the Indian Ocean, the Rocky Mountains, the Mississippi River.

3. 명사가 어떤 것의 종(species) 전체를 가리키거나 유형(type) 전체를 나타낼 때 그 명사 앞에 the를 붙인다.

    the Boeing 747, the Ford Pinto, the IBM 3600, the Polaroid One-Step, The Honda CVCC, etc.

4. 앞에서 언급된 바가 있는 내용을 가리키는 명사가 현재의 문맥에 등장하면 the를 붙인다.

    Soil Physicists have characterized the drying of a soil in three stages. They are: The wet stage, where the evaporation is solely determined by the meteorological conditions. An intermediate state, or drying stage, where the soil occurs in the wet stage early in the day but then dries off because there is not a sufficient amount of water in the soil to meet the evaporation rate ; and

The dry stage, where evaporation is solely determind by the molecular transfer properties of within the soil. There is a striking change in the evaporation rate as the soil dries during the transition from the wet stage to the drying stage.

주. soil physicists (명사를 형용사로 쓴 경우)

     a soil (불특정 개수의 명사가 처음 등장할 때 부정관사 a를 붙임)

     the soil (첫 문장에서 언급한 soil을 가리킨다는 상황표시로 the를 붙임)

5. 명사의 뒤에 수식어가 있어서 그 명사가 독특하고 유일한 명사로 제한될 때 the를 붙인다.

    Theory                  the theory of relativity

    Construction         the construction of Aswan Dam

    Principles              the Principles of thermodynamics

    Cost                       the cost of producing nuclear energy

    Invention               the invention of the electric bulb

    University              the University of Washington

6. 저자와 독자가 다같이 공유하고 있는 지식(shared knowledge)을 가리키는 명사 앞에 the를 붙인다.
