분사구(分詞句) : Participial Phrase

형용사 기능을 갖고 있는 분사구는 문장에 시각적인 촉감각(觸感覺-texture) 생동감(生動感-vividness)과 활력(活力-vitality)을 불어 넣는다.

과학논문에서 분사구는 상당히 빈번하게 사용된다. 논문제목을 위시해서 결론에 이르기까지 논문의 어느 부분에서나 특히 실험이나 simulation에 사용하는 technique, algorithm, methodology등을 소개할 때 분사구가 많이 사용되는 것을 볼 수 있다.다음은 논문의 제목에 분사구를 사용한 예이다.

"Robust Constrained Model Predictive Control using Linear Matrix Inequalities"

1996년 Automatica, vol.32, No.10, pp.1361-1379에 게재된 이 논문의 제목이다. 모델 예측제어 분야에서 빈번하게 인용되고 있는 논문의 제목이다. 이 제목의 후반에 있는 "using Linear Matriz Inequalities"는 분사구로서 전반에 있는 "Robust Constrained Model Predictive Control"을 수식하는 형용사 역할을 한다.

아래 두 문장은 이 논문의 Abstract에서 나온 문장이다.

We present a technique for the synthesis of robust model predictive control(MPC) law, using linear matrix inequalities(LMIs) (using linear matrix inequalities(LMIs)는 앞에 있는 technique for the synthesis를 수식하고 있는 분사구)

Using standard techniques, the problem of minimizing an upper bound on the "worst-case" objective function, subject to input and output constraints, is reduced to a convex optimization involving linear matrix inequalities(LMIs).

위 문장에서 Using standard techniques는 부사역할을 하며 is reduced 를 수식하고 있으며 involving linear matrix inequalities(LMIs) convex optimization을 수식하는 분사구이다.

분사구의 기능 :

분사에는 현재분사(etch + ing)와 과거분사(etch + ed)가 있다. 분사는 (etching or etched) 목적어나 보어나 수식어를 합쳐서 분사구를 형성한다. 많은 경우에 분사구는 그가 수식하는 명사나 대명사 바로 뒤에 나타난다. 그러나 수식하는 단어 앞에 자리잡을 수도 있고 그 뒤에 올 수도 있다.
