명사절에는 that-clause 와 wh-clause의 두 가지 종류가 있다.
That-clause
That personal computers did not exist until 1978 is hard to believe.
주어(that-clause)가 술어(is hard to believe)보다 길어서 문장의 앞머리가 무거워 균형을 잃은 front-heavy sentence가 되는 경우에는 that-clause를 it로 대치하고 명사절을 문장 끝으로 옮겨 쓸 수 있다. 이른바 가주어+진주어의 문장구조로 바꿔쓴다.
It is hard to believe that personal computers did not exist until 1978. 이 경우 that-clause는 believe라는 동사의 목적어 기능을 한다.
Technical writing에서 that-clause는 report, discover, invent, predict, learn 등의 동사의 목적어로 빈번하게 사용되며 보고내용, 발명내용, 예고내용등의 세부사항을 기술하는데 활용된다.
