동명사를 사용하여 2개의 전치사구를 하나로

과학 논문에서 한 문장 안에 전치사구가 두 개 이상 있으면 저자의 의도가 명확하게 전달되지 않는 것을 흔히 본다. 이럴 때는 동명사를 사용하여 두 개의 전치사구를 하나의 전치사구로 줄이면 간결하고 이해하기 쉬운 문장으로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다.

예문 1. 두 개의 전치사구를 가진 문장 : Audier and his coworkers studied the formation of cyclic diols by chemical ionization of a bifunctional organic molecule, HO(CH₂)₄NH₂.

예문 2. Audier and his coworkers studied the formation of cyclic diols by chemically ionizing a bifunctional organic molecule,HO(CH₂)₄NH₂  (동명사를 사용하여 한 개의 전치사구로 줄인 문장)  

예문 1에서 by chemical ionization of a bifunctional organic molecule 은 두 개의 전치사구이다. 첫 번째 전치사구 a bifunctional organic molecule 을 동명사 ionizing의 목적어로 만들면 보다 읽기 쉬운 하나의 전치사구 by chemically ionizing a bifuncional organic molecule HO(CH₂)₄NH₂ 가 된다. 다시 말해서 두 개의 전치사구가 나란히 있을 때 첫 번째 전치사구 안의 명사를 동명사로 바꾸고 구체적으로 이해하기 쉬운 문장이 된다. 전치사구의 수를 줄이면 읽기 쉬운 문장이 된다.

두 개의 전치사구를 가진 문장 : The maximum adsorption amount is used for the determination of the mesopore volume.

                               ↓

The maximum adsorption amount is used for determining the mesopore volume.(동명사를 사용하여 한 개의 전치사구로 줄인 문장)

두 개의 전치사구를 가진 문장 : Cr/MCM-48 sample was manufactured by the introduction of chromium chloride during the gel-preparation stage.

                                  ↓

Cr/MCM-48 sample was manufactured by introducing chromium chloride during the gel-preparation stage. (동명사를 사용하여 한 개의 전치사구로 줄인 문장)
